The best used truck for towing depends on what you tow. A light utility trailer is a very different job from a large camper or a loaded equipment trailer.

Half-Ton Pickups

Half-ton trucks such as the F-150, RAM 1500 and Silverado 1500 handle light to moderate loads like small boats, snowmobile trailers and mid-size campers. They are comfortable daily drivers too.

Three-Quarter-Ton and Heavy Duty

If you pull heavy trailers often, step up to a three-quarter-ton or heavy-duty truck. They offer stronger frames, bigger brakes and higher ratings.

Check the Ratings

Always compare the truck’s tow rating, payload and axle ratio against your trailer’s weight, and leave a margin for safety. The ratings are listed on the door jamb sticker and in the owner’s manual.
